Description
This innovation challenge focuses on mobilising the creativity of young people to apply data science and visualization techniques to uncover “digital deserts” and identify population groups left behind in achieving universal and meaningful connectivity. Through data analysis, storytelling, and teamwork, participants will explore the social, economic, and infrastructural factors shaping digital inclusion and propose data-driven solutions to bridge the digital divide.
With the support of the European Union and under the “Promoting and Measuring Universal and Meaningful Connectivity” project, the hackathon combines an online learning phase with a face-to-face event at the ITU Innovation Centre in New Delhi. Participants will benefit from mentorship, collaboration, and the opportunity to present their results at the World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Teams of worldwide university students and young professionals (age limit 30 years) with strong interest in data visualization and social impact. Disciplines encouraged include:
? Statistics and Data Science
? Economics
? Social Studies
? Informatics
? Graphic Design
? Journalism
? Public Policy
Applications are accepted from both teams (3–5 people) and individual participants. Each team must designate a leader to liaise with the organizers. Participants should be university students or young professionals aged up to 30 years, with a strong interest in data visualization, statistics, or digital inclusion.
Basic knowledge of data analysis tools (such as Excel, R, Python, or GIS software) and good command of English are desirable. Teams from ITU Academia Members will be prioritized, and the participation of women is strongly encouraged.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply data science and visualization techniques to identify connectivity gaps and underserved populations.
- Analyse and interpret datasets related to ICT infrastructure, affordability, access, and digital skills.
- Develop innovative, data-driven approaches to support evidence-based digital inclusion policies.
The hackathon combines an online preparatory phase with a face-to-face competition. During the online phase, participants will attend virtual workshops and mentoring sessions on data sources, visualization, and innovative analysis methods. The in-person phase in New Delhi will focus on teamwork, data exploration, and the development of practical solutions, guided by ITU experts and mentors.
Participants will be evaluated based on the quality, innovation, and policy relevance of their hackathon projects. A jury composed of ITU representatives, policymakers, and experts will review the final presentations and select the winning teams.
All participants will receive ITU certificates of completion, while winning projects will receive special recognition and be showcased through ITU channels. The best teams will also be invited to present their results at the World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
